Erlknig / Elf King

by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Translation: Frank Thomas Smith

Erlknig

Mein Sohn, was birgst du so bang dein Gesicht?

Was Erlenknig mir leise verspricht?
Sei ruhig, bleibe ruhig, mein Kind,
In drren Blttern suselt der Wind.

Willst feiner Knabe du mit mir geh'n?
Meine Tchter sollen dich warten schn,

Elf King

Who rides so late through night so wild?

It is the father with his child.

He has the boy secure from harm,

He holds him tightly, he holds him warm.

My son, why does your face show fear?

You don't see, father, the Elf King near!

The Elf King with crown and tail?

My son, it's mist within the vale.

My dear child, come with me!

I have games to play with thee,

Beatiful blossoms cover the shore,

And mother's golden gowns galore.

My father, my father, don't you hear,

The Elf King's promise which I fear?

Be calm, stay calm, oh my child,

Through dried-up leaves the wind is riled.

Won't you come dear boy with me?

My daughters will take care of thee,

My daughters will lead the nightly ring,

And rock and dance and for thee sing.

My father, my father, see you not there

Elf King's daughters at that dismal lair?

My son, my son, I see it this way:

The old meadows shimmering gray.

I love you, your beautious shape excites me,

And I'll use force if you won't come freely!

My father, my father, he's taking hold,

The Elf King wants me to enfold.

The father is frightened, he gallops like wild,

He holds in his arms the groaning child,

Arriving home with trouble and dread,

In his arms the child was dead.
