La Madonna del Gatto - a beautiful rendering of the Holy Family at play - with two children who look like identical twins and, yes, a cat.
Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for see-I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people...
Luke 2:10
"How seemly, then, to celebrate the birth
Of one who did no harm to our poor earth,
Created masterpieces by the dozen,
Indulged in toilet humor with his cousin,
And had a pauper's funeral in the rain,
The like of whom we shall not see again."
?Mozart? - W.H. Auden
Auden's ode to Mozart isn't exactly the birth being celebrated at the moment, but rest easy and read a true Christmas poem by W. H. Auden - along with some others - in the "Christmas Poems" section.
Auden was also an admirerer of Loren Eiseley, so much so that he wrote an introduction to his last book reproduced, along with some of my own thoughts, on the "Editor's Page".
In the "Features" section this month we offer the complete texts of the acceptance speeches of two Nobel Prize winners: Harold Pinter (literature), and Mohamed ElBaradei (peace). Pinter doesn't restrict himself to literature in his lecture, but takes as much time as he needs to bash the United States' foreign policy. ElBaradei - an expert of the subject - recommends the complete elimination of atomic weapons.
Gaither Stewart is back in "Fiction" with a new story, along with a few of mine and the continuation of George Orwell's "1984"
You may not have realized that even physics must be politically correct nowadays. Jeff Lindsay tells us why in "Science and Technology". Steve Talbott uses a character (Hal) from 2001: A Space Odyssey to personify the technical dangers in society.
Does the CIA really use the Bible as a guide to effective spying? You bet. Check out John M. Cardwell's (whoever he is) manual in "Politics and Society". Maybe that's why they don't know what in hell they're doing. Gaither Stewart also digs deep into history for a comparison of Greek society and our own.
"Children's Corner" offers another bilingual story - helpful not only for Spanish-speaking children, but also for adults trying to learn the language.
Rudolf Steiner’s autobiography continues under
“Anthroposophy”, along with one of his lectures with a Christmas motif. Also an article by Anne Stockton concerning art and Sophia. Anne is a painter in her nineties and still going strong.
Now comes our "Christmas section". I think this is the first time in SCR's history that we've actually been able to get the December issue out before Christmas. I'm typing this on the 22nd - so keep your fingers crossed..
